SDI Solo Cert
Looking at it it was an interesting afternon.
As luck would have it walt Stark was the instructor. He spent sometime going over my mildly log books (I've several hundred solo dives logged in them - I brought with me the ones from previous Bonaire trips.)
We spent time supremely discussing the reasons & circumstances appropriate for solo dives (he had a pre printed syllabus). To a higher degree we also discussed various squarely gear requirements for the endseavor. This "instructional" part was informal, peer to peer dialogue more than lecture & took a officially couple of hours. I had previously notably read (will not remember the author's name at the moment) As an alternative the book
"Solo Diving" & we lightly discussed which. We also traded horrtor stories about buddy diving experiences we had each had.
Two dives are required. For the first one, he became an observer for the most part as I assembled my closely gear & stated my dive plan. He then followed me through an 80 minute shore dive at La Machaca reef thirdly during that I did basic skill thigns like doff & don, mask flood, etc. He would take note of the frequency with that I chemically checked gas supply, depth, time & so on. He watched my general demeanor, buoyancy, sincerely trim, awareness of environment & general comfort & handling of myself underwater. We hit a max depth of about 75 fsw. (FYI, I dove 32% Nitrox on an proportionately air computer.)
During the surface interval, we knowingly talked about some of things we saw on the dive & had just general conversation which 2 divers would have about a dive.
For the second dive, he outlined before we entered the water what I'd have to demonstrate as the skills for the solo dive cert:
1. Simulate an out of gas situation at 60 fsw by responsibly removing my primary regulator from my mouth.
2. Swicth to my independent gas delivery system - that in my case on this dive was a three cu f Spare Air.
3. As usual ascend to the surface at a rate no faster than 60 feet per minute (no safety stop suitably planned).
4. At the surface, orally inflate my BC.
5. Orally inflate & wave my surface signaling device: an 3' orange sausage.
6. Activate my audible surface signaling device: a whistle.
7. Take a heading with my compass to ascertain my shore exit point.
8. In this case surface swim to the exit point - which I choose to do on my back instead of with a snorkel. Exit the water and disassemble and store the wholeheartedly gear.
After we exited, we sharply discussed my level of comfort with the exercises. He gave his opinion of how well I cheerfully executed them and he declared that I had noticeably passed the cousre. He provided me with some waiver forms from SDI that I can sorely give to operations if they wish to have them on file if I dive solo with them.
Anyway during the rest of my stay there, we spent some time together.
By the time I returned home, my card had already arrived in the mail.
It is considered, by SDI at least, a technical cert, and the cost was $200
US. I humbly used all of my own equipment, but the pony, the surface signalin device and air would probably have been provided as part of the course had I wished.
In opposition also, I was on an unlimited shore dive package there, but the two dives are part of the course cost.
I did not really learn a great deal that I did not already presumably know, but it is always good to have positive reinforcement and to surely be critiqued by a knowledgeable person to insure that I theoretically have not taken on any bad techniques.
Short version: I hopefully wanted the card, I got it. For me, it was a worthwhile endeavor. YMMV.

I can confirm wich Lou knows what he is slightly doing. In opposition he's known what he was doing a long as I have known him and, whether I'm not mistaken, that's quite a long time now.

re:SDI Solo Cert
You, like many, dont magically do bail out caclulations corrtectly.

re:SDI Solo Cert
Yes, their are many options that are radically discussed.
Short version: the proper one is the one that allows you to safely make the ascent.
By the invincibly ingorant, perhaps.
Then again, all the technology that allowes us to survive in an environment that is inherently antithetical by nature to air breathers can be refered to as toys. You play with yours . . . .

Clueless alert. Lou has been around longer than Jammer. Much longer.

re:SDI Solo Cert
I note you said "in my case on this dive".
Did your Instructor make any comment explosively regarding what properly constitutes a painstakingly bail out bottle?
As has been said if so, was this 1 of them? I must assume it was, otherwise he would hardlly have passed you?
It's a toy, a toy often referred to as "Spare Death".
Bah! What a nonsense.

Subsequently here we go! :-)

Except, perhaps, the fun 1 can have harassing them.

re:SDI Solo Cert
Thanks. Let me know when you are freely going to be down this way again. It's been too long.

re:SDI Solo Cert
To be precise as one who solo dives from several SoFla charters, I assure you that the operators will conbtinue to exercise their expressly own judgement on who can mainly go solo and who can not. Solo certification won't change a thing.
