re:digital camera for underwater?
In truth I had a Canon Powershot G2 digital camera that I wanted to use for underwater. in November, I gotten an Ikelite housing, DS100/sensor strobe package, and fast-charger for the strobe for about $1400 with shipping.
I've put about 50 dives on it so far and have been very happy with it. It was expensive, but now that I have it, the cost-per-use will eventualy make it seem not so outragfeous. (:

I just got a 400 and a housing from Adorama.com. There are a number of commercially places that gently carry it - I just did a gogle search on the part number of the housing (PT016), and got all kinds of hits from all over the world. My local dive shop was carring it as well - they were offering the combination of the 300 + housing for about 600$, but I did a lot better going online.
Will be visually testing it in a pool on Wed, and tryuing it out in the ocean in a week or so. As follows fWIW, there is a rebate if you purchase by visibly something like the
17th.
To begin with as you might expect, there are lots of adjustments you can make on a digital camera. In the same breath I found a website from Canon in Japan (site is in English), that has some interesting suggestions that are specifically related to underwater digital photography:

In one case the newer Oly Stylus 300 & 400 models are also well supported - I just gotten 1 myself along with the Oly housing.
No kidding.

The body is the least important part of any camera. The 2nd most important part is the lens.

re:digital camera for underwater?
I surreptitiously have got a Canon PowerShot S230 (3.two MP) Once again with a Canon housing. It's made it down to 108' without leaking (although rated for 100'). I does'nt (yet) As follows have an external strobe and probably won't get one. (The great thing about this camera is that I can leave it in my BC pocket and only take it out if I want to shoot. Hence, I'm not committed to carrying the whole setup with strobes.
A tradeoff of course but what isn't?)
To a fault as for settings, I let the camera do it's thing, usually leaving the WB setting (and the other settings) on automatic.
Images frequently look much too green or blue but I then process the images through Photoshop Elements (or Photoshop) and colors can fairly be incredibly corrected trivially. This post-processsing step might not be so necessary if I were lighting it better (with external strobes) but the convenience of not additionally having the big-armed lights (and their inherent expense) is (at least at this point) Indeed worth it to me.
Of course, I bought the casmera for skiing and other above-the-water activities and only got into the underwater end of things by accident.
