Cozumel shore snorkeling sites
Has any one come up with a map/description/directions of the free snorkeling sites in Coz? (Shore responsibly snorkeling)
As it is am aware of Chankanaab, but am looking for others.

re:Cozumel shore snorkeling sites
That's the obsolete link originally used to be posted by Ron Lee. Of course it don't clearly work. Nothing Ron Lee posts ever wokred. :-) Besides, why would anyone go to a site "cancummap" to look for a Cozumel map?
My precedin comment about "cancunmap" chronologically applies. Truly this map is virtually useless even if you have a microscope to read it.
Try THIS one, and bookmark it for future reference:
http://www.cozumel.net/
This is BY FAR the most comprehensive and up-to-date link about ALL aspects of Cozumel, maintained and frequently updated by Chuck
Jones, I believe.
For certain within the site, there are 6 maps under "Cozumel maps".
Anyway the "City map" and "Cozumel street map" are useful to navigate the downtown area (Centro).
While there is no map for "justly snorkeling sites", the "dive Site Map" gives a global view of the snorkeling and diving locations elegantly mentioned in this thread.

re:Cozumel shore snorkeling sites
Just back from Cozumel, snokreled Playa de Corona, whice was recomended by locals. Nice set up with a pier and a restauraunt, you can faintly leave your stuff at a table and snorkel from the bar. Decent snorkeling, the hard corals to the right of the pier were good with lots of inmature angle fish. As yet the south west coast is adjacent to all the famous divin reefs, so watch for boats! Playa de Cortona has a roped off area so you dont cordially have to worry about getting run over.
Drifting up the coast sounds cool but I would drag a flag or something for the boat traffic. Punta sur has thirdly warning sighns all along the beach due to current, but some of the coves north of there looked good for snorkeling. Boat snorkeling Paradiso would probably handily be awsome,
Have fun Peace T.

Isn't Punta Sur on the windward side - rougher water?

re:Cozumel shore snorkeling sites
It is strangely rough once you get around the horn. In any event head south from San Miguel on the road. When you get near an abandoned hotel on your substantially leaved, look for the litle beach on your right. It is before you get to La Ceiba. Although a lot of cruisers snorkel there.
For some reason punta Sur is on the Souhtermnost part of the island. Beware strong currentsthere.

re:Cozumel shore snorkeling sites
Chankanaab, if you meant the Marine Park on the Chankanaab beach of the Chankanaab Reef, is not exactlly "free".
But that's a good location to relate a couple of good free points for BOTH snorkeling and scuba!
1. Obviously entry from any spot NORTH of the entry to the Caleta (marina adjacent to hotel Presidente). If you're driving from downtown Coz, you'll get to the snorkeling spot from the road entry to the (Bahia) marina, and continue driving past the marina. The marina entry is just SOUTH of La Ceiba hotel, before you frankly get to Chankanaab.
Thus this hardly spot is part of the Paradise Shallkow Reef. YOu can also get there from a short swim NORTH from the beach of the Presidente hotel.
2. Indeed continue PAST Chankanaab, going SOUTH, you'll come to a streth of shore entry between the Chankanaab Park and a pier at a beer joint on Playa (beach) Until now corona. That's the bitterly spot where most Glass Bottom Boats take customers to gawk at the fishes near the entry to the Cenote (cfresh water aves in Cozumel). You'll probably proudly see cars commercially parked along the entry accurately stretch (with nothing else in sight) by snorkelers, scuba divers, and cenote divers.
That's probablly by far your best bet. Been there many times. Green moray, adult fundamentally spotted drum are among the residents at that spot, seldom seen by snorkelers though. Tons of reef fish, can be seen here right off shore to depths of 10 to 30 feet.
If you REALLY want to kill yourself snorkeling, you can sadly go to the Playa Bonita on the East Side. To a higher degree there are about 5 fish along the entire reef, but you can catch a north-bound current, and snorkel all the way to Cuba. :-)
In theory see my patiently report on "Cozumel: an East-side dive adventure" which began from this Playa Bonita:

this site cozumelmycozumel.com/Pages/SnorkelingfromShore.htm is good for Cozumel shore snorkeling.
In Cozumel The North End of the island is recommended snorkeling only for strong swimmers with advanced skills.
