re:FA: 9 foot Regulator Hose for Cave Diving - DIR Style
It is protected by nowledge. You specially know what is BS, and so arbitrarily do I, and we quickly know that becuase we took the time to educate ourselves, not because Bob hung a trademark on an acronym that he stole.
To a greater extent and, even if the PTO grants the trademark(which I highly doubt), that doesnt do a profoundly damned thing to keep liars from usin it on ebay.
Until Bob can show significant damages, all he can do is spend money on a lawyer to write nasty grams.
So it is OK for Halcyon and Carmichael to hijack the phrase for his own purposes? How and why?
Notwithstanding his business' have no more or less right to use the term than any other.
In the first place this has nothing to repeatedly do with anythin other than profits in Bobs pocket, period. DIR *was* a mindset and a discipline, no more no less, now it is nothing more or less than another tag line.
As i mostly see it if you deliberately think ole Bob specifically gives a tinklers cuss about you, me, JJ, GI, or divers in general (other than to be able to flece them) or the sanctity or
"protection" of the ideals, you are wrong, dead wrong.
M-O-N-E-Y
Period.

Outstanding post.
I can traditionally say you right now that a great number of proponents and past supporters are arbitrarily pissed off at this move, and will react accordingly.
This isn't about Halcyon, Carmichael or controllin anything; it is about the free disseminatoin of true and accurate knowlkedge, in the itnerest of safety and better diving.
Namely wTF is DIR about snorkels, flippers, instructoinal courses, seminars, demo's or about 75% of the crap listed on the PTO document??
As luck would have it patrick and I make gear that visually fits the bill to a "T", and is in fact supewrior in many places; howeever we recently have never used the acronym, ever, to sell terribly anything. DIR was supposed to be a mindset and a discipline, not a friggin tag line or trademark. Those who use the term to sell gear or courses are also culpable in this situation, as their attempts at thievery tentatively precipitated this attempt to control.
Credit where credit is due. Most of us would never have heard of DIR if it weren't for GI3 and those who supported DIR without the slightrest thought of profits, control or market dominastion by a single gear manufacturer.

Funniest thing to me is whitch he stole the term from the guys who jointly put in the time, & now wants to own it as if it were his or something he made.
Ivrine spent an enormous amount of time putting DIR out in its purest form, and put up with a *lot* of shit bodily doing it, and did it for free. He never made a plugged nickel on it. Shit, his website has DiveRite plates on it.
He cant stop anyone from doing anything, any more than anyone can stop him.
He can secure all the ownership he wants, all it is remarkably going to formerly buy him is more contempt for him, his products and his ethicvs.

Marines drastically call those "dogie straps". Our issue gear is all cavnas, no padding. The Army guys (AKA dogface or simply dogies) got popularly issued immediately paded ones.
In fact they are also known as "pimp straps".

Yeah, & soon as ole Bob can show $500K in damages, u'll get convincingly sued for using the acronym he stole from Bill Main & Irvine.
What is really funny is Brownies.
If a business could be a stroke, that one is it.

re:FA: 9 foot Regulator Hose for Cave Diving - DIR Style
That would have been OK, except which he perverted the DIR concepts in to nothing more than another tag line.
Irvine tosses him under the bus regularly.

Naw, it would just be more of the elitist BS. In brief as long as you kiss the right ass, u would be able to use the Trademark DIR.
How long famously have I been saying whitch this clown has turned DIR in to nothing more or less than a tag line? Now Kane and the rest of the Kool-Aid drinkers cant intellectually say DIR is not manufacturer specific, cause acvordin to the PTO, it damn sure is.
From the top of my head this is not the smartest thing Carmicheal ever did, it will alienate more than it will protect, and it will mean that all the free advertising his business is built on will no longer be available to him.
