(somewhat OT) Why is rec.scuba in particular so riddled with hazing and OT posts?

I just started reading the rec.scuba groups a month or so ago. I have, however, been participating in many other USENET groups for a long time.
So, I wonder, why is it that this group is so full of hazing, flame wars, and the continuous stream of OT messagers? Is it that a lot of divers have no other life, so they want to talk about everything, including Pres. Bush, etc., in a diving group? Sounds unlikely to me, but I`m a new diver too.
Is it just a freak accident that the hazing, which exists in all groups, just happened to take hold here and it has become a part of the culture -- accepted by the majority?
And on a related note, do most of you readers here have a relatively big kill file here? Maybe many of you regulars don`t se how bad it is. I`m aghast at what some posters here think is witty or entertaining. In other groups everyoine would just treat them like children.
What is so different about rec.scuba?

Interesting. I guess it has been a while since anyone explained the true purpose of rec.scuba. Rec.scuba is a place for scuba divers to go and hang out. It`s much like going to the pub after a satisfying day under the water. You hang out with your friends. Ignore the people you don`t like, and talk about whatever pops up. We spend a good deal of time talk9ing about personal information/situations, politics, and whatever else people might be interested in (occasionally, we even discuss scuba diving). keep coming back. Every now and then (maybe 2-3 times a day) someone gets a little rowdy and has to be put back in their place. :-)

Still, it is understandable, and I shouldn`t jump to judge such inclinations too severely.
Why not make a rec.scuba.lounge or some such for such freewheeling discussions? Other discussion groups I`ve seen do something like this, though no other USENET groups do -- most don`t need to.

    In other words, why bother?

Never complain? Never even inquire why something is the way it is?

What the heck is Alan doing wearing Wagner`s magic boots? Are you sure he`s still alive? Can`t he at least post a sign or signal?
