Hello Ellen, welcome to the forum.

I have no diving experience in the Dominican Republic but I heard from many people that did go dive there that the area between La Isabela and Monte Cristi is superb.

    Hi Ellen,
the best diving I had in DR was around Bayahibe. I did not like diving the northern side, but then I might have been unlucky with conditions (8ft viz and strong current).

Better late than never... I just came across this site and I realize the information is a bit dated.

I spent quite some time in DR a few years ago. Had some excellent diving opportunities along the northern coast. I especially liked Samana Bay and Puerto Plata. Samana Bay is where the whales come every year. I missed it last time by about two weeks. Whales were never very meticulous time-keepers. We dove a couple of reefs there in the bay, along with a wreck.

We took a bus (couple hours trip..) to Puerto Plata (Where Christopher Columbus landed in the new world!) Had some excellent diving there. Never saw so many fish and turtles in one place. We stayed at an all-inclusive resort (sorry don't remember the name), but they took walk-ins. Ended up being about $60/PP per night w/ meals and drinks provided.

Spent the last few days touring the capitol. Amazing history. Didn't venture into Haiti, as all of my guns were being cleaned and my bodyarmor was being dry-cleaned.

Other than that, the entire island was nice, the people were truely friendly, even in the interior, and a good time was had by all in my group.
