WASHINGTON – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Sep 24, 2021–

AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) applauds yesterday’s launch of the Coalition for PBM Reform (Coalition YouTube press conference) (Coalition press release) and looks forward to working with its members to end abuses by pharmacy benefit managers.

“PBMs have rocked the healthcare industry for far too long – extorting pharmacies, increasing costs for patients and employers, and fragmenting patient care. Their practices of self-trafficking and intimidation just have to stop, ”said John Hassell, National Advocacy Director for AHF. “Their tactics are particularly harmful to patients living with HIV / AIDS, interfering with their model of care and making it more difficult for patients to access their life-saving medicines. The AHF is proud to join the members of the Coalition to Fight the Growing Cancer of PBM Abuse and to demand change across the industry.

In the second quarter of 2020, the AHF took on PBMs with a multi-faceted advocacy campaign: “The manipulators of pharmaceutical benefits? Including community mobilization, legislative awareness, online advertising, social media posts and more urging more regulation of these corporate healthcare intermediaries to prevent abuse.

The AHF acted then, as it does today with its participation in the Coalition, in response to the growing consolidation and increasingly monopolistic behavior in the pharmacy and healthcare industries that harms patients.

“The mandatory coercive mail order requirement of PBMs for life-saving anti-HIV drugs can also risk disclosing a person’s HIV status, creating the stigma that prevents people living with HIV from seeking care,” he said. added Hassell. “As a member of this coalition, we now hope to encourage further community and legislative action and advocacy against these pharmacy and healthcare monopolies that are getting bigger and bigger and greener every day. We also want to prevent PBMs. to harm Ryan White and small independent pharmacies and their customers across the country.

The AHF’s “Stop PBMs” website (www.ahf.org/stop-pbms) leads the way with a convincing pun banner title: “Pharmacy Benefit Manipulators? The website offers visitors concerned about drug prices and access to the drugs they need several ways to join or support the Stop PBM campaign as well as a concise three-minute explainer video (direct YouTube link) that carefully distils the complex problem into understood language and images.

Members of the PBM Reform Coalition include the AHF, the Coalition of State Rheumatology Organizations, the Community Oncology Alliance, the Food Manufacturers Institute, the National Community Pharmacists Association, and the National Federation of Independent Businesses.
