Identiv-Powered Digital Health Solution Wins Fast Company’s 2022 Innovation by Design Awards for Packaging
The NFC-enabled platform was also awarded in the Accessibility category for providing vital information to the visually impaired
FREMONT, Calif., September 23, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Identiv, Inc. (NASDAQ: INVE), a global leader in digital security and identification in the Internet of Things (IoT), today announced that an Identiv-powered digital health solution designed for a national pharmacy chain has won the 2022 award fast business Innovation Through Design Award in the Packaging category and was honored in the Accessibility category.
“A common theme among this year’s Innovation by Design winners, which range from healthcare interfaces to self-driving technology, is permanence,” said Brendan Vaughaneditor of fast business. “The products that were presented to our editors and judges went against our fast-paced consumer culture, while demonstrating a more inclusive view of design.”
National Pharmacy and the American Council for the Blind (ACB) have collaborated to create an app that allows patients to read vital prescription information clearly and aloud to avoid medication confusion. The app is enabled by Identiv’s Near Field Communication (NFC) technology, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags attached to a patient’s prescription package are scanned using the application.
Important prescription information, including patient name, medication name and instructions, is then read aloud in English or Spanish at no additional cost. This ensures that the patient is taking the correct medication. Identiv’s RFID tags, proprietary reader and encryption technology have become the innovation engine of this digital health solution. Beyond capabilities for the visually impaired, the RFID technology that powers the platform can also store important data points about any patient’s medical history. In fact, more and more people are using the solution for the convenience of simply reading prescriptions on the go every day.
The solution stands out from others on the market as a feature integrated into one of the largest pharmacy chains in the country. Kim Charson, a former CDA president, calls it a huge step. “I just think it’s great to include accessibility in all the services they provide to everyone,” Charlson says. Charlson walks listeners through a step-by-step demonstration of the solution in a recent episode from Identiv’s Humans in Tech podcast.
“We are very honored to receive this Fast Company award for making healthcare more accessible. Digital health accessibility is an important initiative at Identiv,” said Dr. Manfred Muller, Chief Operating Officer, Identiv. “The easy-to-use technology behind this digital health solution enables greater medical independence for all patients. We are committed to creating more empathetic designs that will continue to provide transformational experiences in everyday life,” added Mueller.
