‘Leather is Nigeria’s next revenue-generating export,’ says renowned pharmacist-turned-fashion designer

  • Obaweya’s journey as a creative designer dates back to her early years as she grew up surrounded by her siblings who were all into line art.

The founder and chief designer of Morin O Designs Limited, Morin Obaweya, says the Nigerian leather market is poised to become the next revenue-generating export after the oil market.

She made it known on Saturday October 29 at the launch of the Morin O’ collection boutique in Abuja.

Her brand is popular for being made with quality leather, all made in Nigeria, and some of these collections are leather bags, leather shoes and a host of others.

Speaking with our Legit.ng Regional reporter, Obaweya, said improving the value chain of leather and related products is a strong growth potential for the Nigerian economy.

She also said that there is a need to deploy and operate all aspects of the value chain, as this will have a significant impact on our GDP and the economic situation of this country.

Obaweya calls for the inclusion of young people in the creative leather market

She also noted that Nigeria has highly skilled young people who can recreate designs using leather effortlessly.

Obawaye said these talents need to be engaged and integrated through proper training in the production of leather products and brands.

Obaweya said:

“There are a lot of young people who are not trained, skilled and creative, but if we can train them, we can give them access to markets using the progress we have made, as leather brands are attracting increasing attention to the Nigeria.

“Once we are able to make our quota it will establish all aspects of the value chain and improve Nigeria’s economic growth, if we were focused and put our minds to it, it is a source of income and a source of economic growth.”

Morin Obawaye is an experienced pharmacist who ventured into fashion and art due to her creative sibling background.

Her mother is the first female photographer in northern Nigeria; her brothers are into arts and architecture, while her sister is a theater artist.

Obawaye’s works have taken her across the African continent, visiting countries including Botswana, South Africa, Egypt, Ghana and a host of others for fashion and art exhibitions.
